Amorphophallus raungensis — The New Species from Mount Raung Almost Nobody Knew About Amorphophallus raungensis was formally entered into the scientific literature in April 2026 — described in the journal Phytotaxa by Yuzammi, Ina Erlinawati, and Wilbert Hetterscheid. But before that formal description was published, the plant had already been circulating in collector circles under the provisional name A. raungensis “Black.” In this video we go through everything we currently know: the taxonomic background and the context of its discovery, full morphology from tuber to inflorescence – including why the absence of an annulus and the narrower appendix matter diagnostically — the genus’s deceptive pollination strategy, the ecology of its habitat on the slopes of Mount Raung, and what it means for a narrowly endemic species to be formally described on an island that has already lost more than 95% of its original forest cover.
